Board Engagement through Site Visits
Nothing strengthens board engagement like firsthand experience. Program site visits offer a powerful way to connect board members with the organization’s mission. These visits allow board members and funders to witness the impact of your programs through the eyes of clients and staff. This experiential learning is far more impactful than any written or spoken report.
Plan these visits regularly, perhaps quarterly, to allow staff time for preparation. Prioritize client confidentiality and dignity, ensuring any necessary confidentiality statements are in place. Make the visits interactive. Encourage board members to participate in activities such as packing food at a food bank, reading with children, or visiting a home building site. These hands on experiences create memorable and meaningful connections.
Safety is paramount. Ensure signed release of liability statements are obtained. Some organizations with highly confidential services may not be able to offer traditional site visits. In these cases, consider inviting clients to share their experiences virtually. This provides a safe and effective way to showcase the organization’s impact. Site visits transform board members from passive observers to active advocates.
