Board Engagement: Committee Meetings

While board meetings are important, the real work often happens in committee meetings. Committees provide a space for in depth discussions and decision making. Smaller groups foster a more conducive environment for asking critical questions and developing transformative ideas. These meetings are also vital for developing future leaders.

Provide orientation for committee chairs on effective meeting processes and agenda building. Clearly define the roles of board and staff members. When scheduling meetings, determine which should be in person and which can be virtual. Build committees with potential future board members to give them leadership opportunities.

Maintain professionalism in committee meetings by assigning action items and following up on them. Share significant committee recommendations with the board, providing a written rationale for each recommendation. If board approval is needed, draft a motion for consideration. This streamlined process ensures clarity and efficiency. A one page document outlining the recommendation, rationale, and motion facilitates effective communication. Committee meetings are where strategic initiatives take shape and future leaders are nurtured.
